The Big Problem – A worn or broken timing chain can cause catastrophic engine failure, in some cases costing up to $10,000 to repair.

The Cause of the Problem – The early YD engines (YD22) were fitted with a duplex style timing chain from factory, timing chain failures in these engines were very rare. When they introduced the YD25 engine, that Duplex chain was replaced with a single row primary timing chain. The weak single row primary timing chain wears excessively. This causes it to stretch and rattle against the guides and timing cover. Faulty timing chain tensioners are also a common problem and cause the chain to become loose which increases the wear rate.

The noise you are hearing is one of 3 things.

1. Either your stretched timing chain is rubbing on places it shouldn’t be touching.
2. One of your timing chain tensioners has failed and is taking too long to take up the slack on the chain (usually exaggerated by a worn chain).
3. The chain links are damaged and the chain is binding on itself as it runs over the sprockets.

Either way, if you leave it until such a time that the timing chain breaks you will be staring down the barrel of a much more expensive repair.

Once the engine gets running, the oil pressure acting on the tensioners will take up most of the slack in the chain. This will often quieten the noise or remove it all together, giving the impression that there is no real problem… nothing could be further from the truth. The chain is physically worn and will break when the wear becomes severe enough.

Most affected vehicles are between 2006 and 2010 on Spanish Built Navaras and Pathfinders and all the way through on the Thai models.

How to Fix The Problem

If you are unsure, give us a quick call at the workshop and we will be happy to have a chat. In most cases, we can pick a potentially worn timing chain by doing a cold start check and listening to the chain through a complete heat cycle. There is no charge to do this, but the only way to be 100% sure is to remove the covers and physically inspect the chain condition. This takes around 4 hrs and cost $460. You only pay that if the chains checkout ok and we don’t go ahead with any repairs. If the chain needs replacing and we continue and do the job for you, there is no extra charge for the checks.
Should we find the timing chain, guides or tensioners to be worn or damaged we seek your permission to replace them, preferably with an upgraded double row timing chain kit. A cheaper option is to fit a standard replacement (single row chain) however this cheaper option may not be a permanent solution as it is still using a weak single row timing chain.

If this task is undertaken by a mechanic without the expertise and specific knowledge of the Nissan Navara’s or Pathfinder’s timing chain problem they can easily mistime the balance shaft, release tension on the scissor gear, mistime the camshafts, cause oil leaks, damage O-rings on the oil pump which can cause oil pressure problems and damage the motor, damage harmonic balancer when removing it or lose important locating pins in the timing cover. With this job, there are a few special tools required and there are so many simple mistakes that can be made which can potentially cause significant damage to your engine. For these reasons we have had many mechanics on the Gold Coast recommend us and send their clients vehicles to us for timing chain repairs.

Less specialised mechanics have been known to charge up to and over $5,000 as they don’t have the specialist equipment and expertise to undertake this task quickly and confidently.
